Just a quick note from us, though we did not win the competition we did have a great evening and enjoyed performing to so many new faces.
Congratulations to Lake Komo for winning, to the other acts for playing so well, and to the Academy of Music & Sound, sE Electronics and Kerrang! Radio for organising the event.

The Mourning Suns at The Flapper: Birmingham, Midlands
Mesmerising Brummie five-piece The Mourning Suns are taking to the stage at The Flapper tonight alongside Sunrise Over Europe. Their powerfully poetic and skilfully creative alt sound is something that needs to be experienced live; combining touches of sixties psychedelic folk, occasional nods to jazz instrumentals and Kate Bush-style harmonies. As this show follows soon after an appearance in Kerrang’s Unsigned Lounge, there’s plenty to suggest that this is an act with the ability to continue impressing fans and critics alike. We’re definitely sold, so do make a note of getting to their show if you can.

We didn’t quite make the finals but we made the Longlist and we think that’s pretty awesome seems we are only a year old!
We also got this awesome review by Peter Lanceley on the Glastonbury Festival Website:
“The Mourning Suns latest track “A Cloud” - recorded as part of EMI/The Roundhouse’s 30/30 project for 2012-13 - is a stunning foray into the realms of sprawling, folk tinged rock music. Warpaint immediately spring to mind on first listen, as does a touch of the sinisterness of Esben & The Witch. But besides the gorgeous crunch and reverberation of the guitars, there is much to be said for the patience with which TMS both choose and subsequently develop their ideas; the realisations of which are refreshingly well-constrained and ineffably powerful.”

Let’s see how we fair when we take another crack at it next year!

Emerging Icons have announced us in their Top 5 Live Bands to see - and are spreading the word about our gig next Wednesday, at The Yardbird, Birmingham.
Since featuring them in our ‘You Need To Hear This’ feature a couple of weeks ago, we’ve been wondering just how awesome a band like The Mourning Suns might be live. Well, as luck might have it- we have our chance to find out. Taking to the stage at Birmingham’s hot little nightspot, The Yardbird, this beguiling bunch will have the chance to smoulder on that intimate stage. Impossibly intense and brimming with drama, a set from The Mourning Suns won’t be for the faint-hearted…but for new music fans in search of something uniquely creative and driven with raw self-expression, definitely give it a go. With a strongly guitar-driven alt rock sound, it’s a venture through dark, haunting soundscapes and curious dreams, and hopefully you’ll come out at the other end feeling inspired, stunned if not a little bit mind-sh*gged.

We’ve been very lucky so far this month, we’ve received a lot of love and support from Emerging Icons.
We’ve featured in their blog for New Music - You Need to Hear This:
The Mourning Suns- Metal Horses
Fresh and unique creativity are qualities we champion in new musicians, and The Mourning Suns are a prime example of just that. To dare to be so different is something to be admired- which may be why they’ve made the longlist for Glastonbury’s Emerging Talent Competition. With their intense and powerfully haunting sound, the Birmingham-based quintet caught the eye of leading blog This Music Wins on the judging panel. ‘Warpaint immediately spring to mind on first listen, as does a touch of the sinisterness of Esben & The Witch. But besides the gorgeous crunch and reverberation of the guitars, there is much to be said for the patience with which TMS both choose and subsequently develop their ideas.’ We couldn’t agree more. The vast cinematic quality of ‘Metal Horses’ could probably fit quite well in a nouveau-Western soundtrack too; but for now we’ll sit here hypnotised by this video mind-warp.
